Local Radio Enthusiasts Welcome Visitors to Field Day Event

Radio amateurs from the Mon-Yough area will join a worldwide network of like-minded electronics hobbyists this weekend for Field Day.
The McKeesport-based Two Rivers Amateur Radio Club will hold Field Day events at the Lincoln Borough Volunteer Fire Department social hall, 4326 Liberty Way, beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday and continuing through 2 p.m. Sunday, said Jeremiah Ostrosky Sr., the club’s field day coordinator, who holds the amateur call sign KD3BAA.
Ostrosky said the public is welcome to visit, ask questions and learn more about amateur radio and emergency communications.
Created in 1933, Field Day is an annual but informal test of emergency preparedness for amateur radio operators — hobbyists who are licensed to use restricted radio bands for two-way and networked communications. In the United States, Field Day is organized by the American Radio Relay League, the largest national organization for radio hobbyists.
John Moskala (K3CRO), a Two Rivers club trustee, said club members will be practicing emergency communications drills; demonstrating radios and operating techniques for the public; conducting workshops; and discussing the club’s history and mission.
Founded in 1962, the Two Rivers Amateur Radio Club is a dedicated group of amateur radio enthusiasts committed to advancing the art and science of radio communications while fostering strong community ties, Moskala said. The club welcomes all skill levels, from beginners to seasoned operators.
The club regularly hosts training sessions, licensing exams and events to engage the community, he said.
In the past, Two Rivers club members have hosted Field Day at White Oak Park. This year, Moskala said, the club is using an athletic field next to the Lincoln Borough fire department’s social hall to maximize visibility and accessibility. The site has “ample space for antennas, transmitting equipment and visitor activities,” he said.
